If you live in Haywards Heath and your BMW or Ford is starting to rattle on a cold morning, you are in the right place. Timing Chain Gatwick is a specialist workshop on Copthorne Common, roughly twelve miles north of the town via the A272 and A23. We do one job, and we do it properly: timing chain replacement on BMW diesel and petrol engines, and wet belt replacement on Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue units. That focus is why drivers from Lindfield, Cuckfield, Scaynes Hill and Bolnore Village trust us with cars they cannot afford to get wrong.

Why Haywards Heath drivers choose Timing Chain Gatwick

Haywards Heath sits in the Mid Sussex commuter belt, and the cars on the driveways reflect that. We see plenty of late-model BMWs handling a daily London commute, alongside family Fords doing the school run between Victoria Park and the Princess Royal Hospital. Whatever the car, what our customers value is the same.

  • Genuine OEM parts only. Chains, guides, tensioners, sprockets, wet belts and oil pump kits come from the original manufacturer. No pattern parts on engines this sensitive.
  • Free vehicle collection within fifteen miles. Haywards Heath sits comfortably inside that radius, so we pick the car up from home or work at no extra charge.
  • Fixed-price quotes in writing. You get the full figure before any spanners come out, with no “while we were in there” surprises.
  • Twelve-month parts and labour warranty on every timing chain and wet belt job.
  • A specialist, not a general garage. Our techs work on the same family of engines every day, which means quicker diagnosis and a cleaner rebuild.

Haywards Heath cars and vans we work on

The bulk of what we see from RH16 and RH17 is German metal. Our BMW timing chain work covers the engines known for chain stretch and guide failure:

  • N47 2.0 diesel — the engine that built our reputation. Found in 1, 3 and 5 Series, X1 and X3 from the late 2000s to mid 2010s. The rear-mounted chain is the classic horror story.
  • N57 3.0 straight-six diesel — common in 5 Series, X5 and X6 models popular with families around Lindfield and Cuckfield.
  • B47 2.0 diesel — successor to the N47, fitted from around 2014. Improved but not immune.
  • N20 2.0 petrol — turbocharged four-cylinder in 3 Series, 5 Series and X3, known for chain wear before 80,000 miles.
  • B58 3.0 petrol — modern straight-six in M140i, 340i and Z4.

On the Ford side, we handle 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt replacement on Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, EcoSport and Puma, plus 2.0 EcoBlue wet belt work on Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy. For commercial drivers, our Transit EcoBlue timing belt service covers the 2.0 unit in Transit Custom and full-size Transit. The smaller 1.5 EcoBlue in Focus and Fiesta sits within the same wet-belt programme. For broader background on these jobs see our Ford timing belt and chain page.

Free collection across RH16 and RH17

A chain job ties up a car for a couple of days, and dropping it off in Copthorne is not always practical. Collection is free anywhere within fifteen miles of our workshop, which covers the whole of Haywards Heath and surrounding villages. We regularly collect from:

  • Haywards Heath town centre, including The Broadway and South Road
  • Lindfield and Lindfield Common
  • Cuckfield and Cuckfield Park
  • Scaynes Hill and the Bluebell Railway corridor towards Sheffield Park
  • Bolnore Village and Franklands Village
  • Victoria Park and the streets around the Princess Royal Hospital

Once the work is done we drop the car back to the same address. If you prefer to drive over, the run up the A23 from Bolney takes about twenty-five minutes outside rush hour. The full list of villages and postcodes is on our areas we cover page.

Warning signs to act on

Timing chains and wet belts rarely fail without warning. The trouble is the warnings are easy to dismiss until the engine lets go on the A272. If any of these sound familiar, book a look before the problem becomes a new engine.

  • A rattle on cold start that lasts a second or two then disappears — the most common sign of a stretched chain or worn tensioner.
  • A diesel-like rattle on a petrol N20 or B58, especially under light load.
  • Fault codes such as P0016 or P0011 (cam/crank correlation), or BMW codes 2A87, 2A86 and 2AAF. These point straight at chain timing drift.
  • An oil pressure warning that flickers at idle or under heavy braking. On wet-belt Fords this can mean belt debris choking the oil pickup.
  • Rough running, misfires or loss of power with no obvious ignition fault.
  • Black sludge in the oil filler cap on a 1.0 EcoBoost — a strong hint the wet belt is breaking down.

Costs and what’s involved

Honest answer first: every job is quoted on the specific car, because labour content varies enormously between an N47 chain (engine out on most platforms) and a 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt (engine stays in, but fiddly). In general terms:

A Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt replacement, done properly with the oil pump belt and a full flush, typically sits in the mid hundreds. A 1.5 or 2.0 EcoBlue wet belt is similar, leaning higher on the bigger Transit work. A BMW N20 or B58 petrol chain tends to land in the upper hundreds to lower four figures depending on what guides and sprockets need replacing. The N47, N57 and B47 diesel chain jobs are the most labour-intensive and generally fall in the mid four figures.

What goes into the price is straightforward: genuine OEM parts, fresh oil and filter, any seals disturbed during the job, and the time it takes to do the work without cutting corners. You get the full figure in writing before we start via our free estimate form, and it does not move unless we find something that changes the scope.
